Shrap spent the rest of the day in the library reading the newspapers, then, just before five, made her way to Southwark police station. She took up a position at the bus stop, a block down from the squat brick building, and waited. Police detectives’ hours were erratic, so she couldn’t be sure what time Trevelyan would emerge from the building and head home. It didn’t matter, she had nothing better to do.

It was closer to six when he finally left work. He emerged onto the street, rucksack over one shoulder, still doing up the zip on his jacket. His hair was messy, like he’d been running his fingers through it all day. He adjusted the straps of his rucksack then glanced up and down the street.

Borough tube station was to the right and Elephant and Castle to the left. Which way would he go?

He turned right.

She followed, hoodie up, as he walked down Borough High Street. In front of them, the Shard was lit up like a gold stiletto piercing the night sky. Shrap was expecting him to catch the tube, but instead, he kept walking, past Guy’s Hospital, until he got to London Bridge, a good fifteen minutes from the police station. He didn’t appear to be in a rush, and at one point he stopped at a newsagent and came out with a can of Coke and a newspaper. He slid the newspaper into his rucksack and drank the Coke as he walked the rest of the way.

He was an easy target to follow. Not once did he turn around or even seem aware of his surroundings. She could only surmise he must have been deep in thought.

Shrap followed him into the London Bridge Underground station, where he caught the Jubilee line westwards. She stood a carriage down, side on, hood up, and watched him in her peripheral vision. Only her profile was visible, not that he’d be able to see her through the afterwork crush.

She nearly lost him at Bermondsey when he got off the train. A surge of people pressed on and Shrap, who’d waited till the last minute to be sure he was getting off, had to push past them. He was disappearing up the escalator by the time she made it onto the platform.

Rushing, she spotted him exiting the station. She kept her distance, losing herself in the crowd. He crossed at the pedestrian crossing, before turning left and disappearing down a side street. She followed, head down, making sure there was plenty of distance between her and him. Nothing obvious.

Two-thirds of the way down, he stopped and shrugged a shoulder out of his rucksack. Reaching inside, he retrieved a set of keys, then climbed the four or five steps to his front door and inserted them.

In a heartbeat, Shrap was behind him.

“You were looking for me?”
